Miss China Wins Miss World 2007

Miss China Zi Lin Zhang was crowned Miss World 2007 at a glittering event at the Chinese tourist resort of Sanya Saturday, beating 106 participants. India's Sarah-Jane Dias failed to make it to the semi-finals.

Miss Angola Micaela Reis, 18, was the first runner up while 19-year-old Carolina Mor n from Mexico was the second runner up at the gala Saturday night held in the Crown of Beauty Theater at Sanya in Hainan province.

Zhang was crowned by last year's Miss World, Tatana Kucharova, from the Czech Republic, after Julia Morley, chairperson of the Miss World Organisation and of the international panel of judges, announced her name as the winner.

Valene Maharaj of Trinidad and Tobago and Annie Oliv of Sweden were the other two in the last five at the pageant, the second largest edition after Miss World 2003.

The delegates reached Sanya on November 2 and visited a number of popular spots in China.

In the fast track awards, Zhang was the Miss World Top Model, Miss Dominican Republic Ada Aim e de la Cruz the Miss World Beach Beauty, Miss United States Abigail McCary the Miss World Sports and Miss Ghana Irene Dwomoh the Miss World Talent.

The Beauty With A Purpose title was won jointly by Miss Ecuador Valeska Saab and Miss Hong Kong Kayi Cheung.

Unlike 2005 and 2006 editions, this year's event did not have continental zones in the selection of the semi-finalists.

The event, hosted by Chinese TV presenter Angela Chow and Latin American celebrity Fernando Allende, also witnessed some high voltage and touching dance performances.

One of the highlights was Mandla Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela, introducing his grandfather's televised message on World Aids Day. It was followed by children from South Africa and a local school and all the contestants joining in singing the World Aids Day song.

2nd runner-up -> Miss Mexico - Carolina Moran Gordillo

Age: 19
Occupation: Student
Height: 178

Carolina was raised in the seaside town of Manzanillo, Mexico, which she loves in all its diversity. She is proud that the Maya site of Chichen Itza was chosen as one of the seven wonders of the modern world.

At 15 she spent two years with her aunt in France, practising French and modelled to help with her expenses. Her ambition after completing her year as Miss Mexico is to study International Relations at university.

Carolina enjoys travel, going to the movies and theatre, reading, swimming, dancing and athletics and is a fan of both Mexican folklore and Mexican food – tacos and chocolate. She also spends time looking after her pets; Cuca a schnauzer dog, and a turtle named Lechuguita.

The proudest moment in her life came when she and her mother lent a hand to help rescue crews in the aftermath of an earthquake in Mexico City.

Her mottoes are “Family life is a foretaste of heaven” and “We can have a better life if we improve our attitude”.


1st runner-up -> Miss Angola - Micaela Reis

Height: 176

Micaela was born in Portugal and grew up in Lisbon and Angola. She loves both countries and now lives in the rapidly-growing city of Luanda.

She has just finished high school and hopes after her year as Miss Angola to study law at Harvard, qualify as a lawyer, and aspires to be a Judge.

As Miss Angola she is an “ambassador of hope” for people whose lives have been affected by HIV. She is a keen sportswoman and enjoys tennis and volleyball.

Micaela’s favourite dishes feature salad, pasta and sauces. Her hobbies include dancing, writing and surfing the Internet.

Her motto is “Enjoy life, life is fast!”


Winner of Miss World 2007 -> Miss China - Zi Lin Zhang

Occupation: Secretary
Height: 182

Zi Lin was born in Shi Jia Zhuang City in Hei Bei Province, then moved to the capital, Beijing, Beijing will be host city to the 2008 Olympic Games.

She attended the University of Science & Technology and attained a Degree in Business Administration, and is now working as a company secretary.

Hobbies and sporting interests include: travel; reading; watching movies, writing, sports; 100 meters jump & hurdle, triple jump, swimming, both classical and folk dancing, and listing to folk music. Her favourite food is; fruit, chocolate, and ice cream.

Zi Lin’s personal motto is “Where there’s a will there’s a way”.

Noelia lives in San Salvador de Jujuy in Argentina, a country of beautiful landscapes and a wonderful climate.

Currently she is a Biochemistry Student, her future ambition is to specialise in Genetics.

Hobbies include running, swimming, horse riding, listening to Latin music, her special talents lie in drawing and crafts. Noelia’s favourite food is Pizza.




Miss Albania - Elda Dushi

Elda was brought up in the capital, Tirana.

She is a college student and hopes one day to be a successful diplomat.

Her hobbies and sporting interests include: fashion design, modern dancing, basketball, tennis, swimming, listening to dance and house music, and looking after her lovely 5 year old dog called Poki. She enjoys traditional cooking, Italian pasta and Mexican food.

Her personal motto is from a saying of Mother Theresas’ “Do small things with great love”.



Miss Bolivia - Sandra Lea Hernandez Saavedra

Sandra was born and grew up in Cochabamba, Bolivia, a country diverse in both cultural and ethnic terms.

Growing up on a dairy and chicken farm she learned how to drive a tractor before driving a car. Sandra has completed one year of her studies in International Commerce, her future ambition is to graduate from University and work in this field.

Since the age of 17 she has also worked for LAB (Bolivian Airlines) as a flight attendant, this has enabled her to see many different countries. She adores Chinese food, Peanut soup and Charque. She enjoys singing and aerobics.

Miss England - Georgia Faye Horsley

Occupation: Beauty Therapist
Height: 173

Born and raised near Malton in North Yorkshire close to the historic city of York, Georgia is a qualified beauty therapist and model. She is planning to take a degree in design media and make-up as a prelude to a career in film and fashion.

Her artistic talents manifest themselves through both natural and fantasy make-up, painting and flower arranging. She is adept in many sports including: trampoline, kick boxing, rock climbing, horse riding and kayaking.

She enjoys Mum’s fish cakes and Italian food. Georgia enjoys dancing and listens to pop and chart music for fun.

Sarah-Jane was born in Mumbai, India, was brought up in Muscat in the Sultanate of Oman, (her father was in the oil business). Moving back to Mumbai in 2001 Sarah-Jane studied sociology at the University of Mumbai and is now a media professional.

She looks forward to a career where her acting and singing talents will be advantageous. She is a former V.J. with an Indian TV Channel, where her job combines her passion of music and travel.

Yendi comes from Kingston, that treasure trove of memories of Bob Marley and other reggae stars, and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Recreation and Leisure Management, having completed a Bachelor’s degree in Dance.

She taught dance for three years in Jamaica and worked for a year as a student event programmer in New York. Dancing is her special talent, whether it be modern, jazz, African or traditional Caribbean.

Her ambition is to run her own business as a dance educator and promoter of holistic wellness programmes.

As well as dance, her hobbies include watching cricket, going to the beach, swimming and reading. She has a penchant for pastries.

Miss Peru - Cynthia Jessenia Calderon Ulloa

Cynthia’s from Tacna, near the border with Chile.

She enjoys local dishes like “picante a la tacneña”, “papas a la huancaína” and “ají de gallijna”. Cynthia is a language student and after completing her duties as Miss Peru she will be studying communication science when she goes back to university, it is her ambition to advance her country’s development.

She sings and plays the guitar, and she dances in various styles from traditional marinera and huayno to popular modern dance. Cynthia practises athletics. In her free time she looks after her two pet dogs.

Munachi ws born and brought up in Rivers State, Nigeria, a country rich in cultural heritage and mineral resources.

The divergent paths of diplomacy and entertainment attract Munachi; she’s already a goodwill ambassador for Nigeria, but she would like to become a political ambassador when she completes her studies. She has worked as a volunteer with the Sickle Cell Foundation and helped publicise the crisis in the Niger delta.

Miss Slovakia - Veronika Husárová

Born in Komarmo near the Hungarian border, Veronika is in Law School and hopes to qualify as a Lawyer and to use her knowledge of commercial law in business.

She has danced professionally since the age of 10, and enjoys both standard and Latino dance. She practises several sports including: tennis, swimming, skiing and bowling.

Her favourite music includes Latino and R’n’B. Her proudest moments were when she came second in a national dance competition, and when she learned she’d passed her exam to enter University. As well as Slovak cuisine, she enjoys Chinese, Italian and Japanese.

Miss Ukraine - Lika Roman

Lika was born among the beautiful mountains in Uzhgorod, in the Ukraine.

She is musical and enjoys playing the piano, singing and Jewish dance. Lika studied International Relations for her higher education and took a hairdressing qualification. She finds hairdressing an absorbing hobby.

Her other hobbies include photography, going to the gym and skiing. She also enjoys looking after her pet cat. She is currently employed in her role as Miss Ukraine, her ambition is to engage in social work and work on projects helping the orphans. Favourite food is fruit and vegetables.



Miss Australia - Caroline Louise Clowes Pemberton

Caroline is the youngest of three children. Born in Sydney, she lived as a child on beautiful Lake Macquarie to the north.

Like her brother, the youngest Australian to climb Everest, she’s a high achiever, she’s hoping for a First in her Psychology degree, complete a Masters in Neuro Psychology, followed by a doctorate in this area.

She was voted a Goodwill Ambassador by UNICEF Australia. Caroline is well travelled and has visited all continents except Antarctica.

She is a devotee of extreme sports including: water skiing, scuba-diving, sailing, canoeing, snow skiing & trekking, rock ice climbing, but still finds time for reading extensively in science and literature as well as charcoal drawing and Ceroc dance lessons.

Stephanie grew up in Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand, known as the city of sails as it boarders on two harbours.
